Long Division Support Sheet: Step-by-Step Frames

Year 6 MathsFour Operations4 pages

About this worksheet

This Year 6 long division sheet gives pupils a frame for every step. Page 1 works through 384 รท 12 in eight labelled steps, from divide to check, with the multiples of 12 and a reminder box on remainders. Page 2 has six three-digit divisions by 12 or 15 in frames, and the first two are already started. Page 3 has four four-digit divisions: 3456 รท 12 and three word problems about pencils, juice and seedlings. The answer page shows each subtraction. It is the support version of long division for the England National Curriculum in Year 6.

Curriculum objectives covered

Number - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

โ€œDivide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division, and interpret remainders as whole number remainders, fractions, or by rounding, as appropriate for the contextโ€

Questions 1 to 10 use long division, and questions 8, 9 and 10 need a whole remainder, a fraction and a rounded-up answer in turn.

Number - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

โ€œSolve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and divisionโ€

The pencils, juice and seedlings questions on page 3 set each division in a real context.

What's inside this worksheet

Follow a worked example

384 รท 12 in eight labelled steps, then the multiples of 12 up to 120 and a box on what to do with remainders.

Three-digit divisions

Six frames, from 456 รท 12 to 842 รท 15. Questions 1 and 2 show the first subtraction, and each frame has spaces for the answer and remainder.

Four-digit divisions

Pupils calculate 3456 รท 12, pack 4879 pencils into 15s, share 2565 ml between 12 jugs as a mixed number, and find the fewest trays for 3286 seedlings.

Answers

Each answer lists every subtraction step. The seedling answer explains why 219 remainder 1 becomes 220 trays.

How teachers use it

Say the steps

Read the eight steps for 384 รท 12 aloud together. Pupils repeat divide, multiply, subtract, bring down before they open page 2.

Watch the started frames

Walk round during questions 1 and 2. A pupil who stalls at 96 รท 12 needs the multiples list, not more questions.

Remainder debate

After page 3, ask why the pencils leave 4 over but the seedlings need 220 trays. The reminder box on page 1 gives the rule to point back to.
