About this worksheet

Set around AD 900, this Year 6 history comparison asks pupils to sort 16 feature cards into three columns: Maya Civilisation Only, Both Societies and Anglo-Saxon Britain Only. The cards range from stepped stone pyramids and pok-ta-pok to carved rune stones and thatched wooden halls. A British Museum curator framing has pupils fixing a muddled exhibition display. Page 2 asks which card was hardest to place and for one new fact in each column. The answer key explains the tricky cards, such as 'Skilled in metalwork'. It is written for the England National Curriculum KS2 non-European society study.

Curriculum objectives covered

Non-European society

โ€œA non-European society that provides contrasts with British historyโ€

The sheet uses Mayan civilization c. AD 900, one of the three options the curriculum names. The card sort sets Maya features against Anglo-Saxon ones.

Anglo-Saxons and Scots

โ€œBritain's settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scotsโ€

Partial. Four cards, including carved rune stones and converting to Christianity, are Anglo-Saxon only. The sheet does not cover the settlement itself.

What's inside this worksheet

Sort the exhibition notes

Pupils write 16 features into a three-column table. Some are clear, such as hieroglyphic script and using the number zero. Others, such as 'Polytheistic (early AD 500)', need careful reading.

Curator's Reflections

Question 1 asks which item was trickiest and why. Question 2 asks pupils to add one new fact of their own to each column.

Answers

Six cards in each of the Maya and Both columns and four for the Anglo-Saxons, with notes on three tricky cards and example facts such as burhs and paper codices.

How teachers use it

Cut-out cards

Print page 1 on card and cut out the 16 features. Groups can move them between columns while they argue, and write only when they agree.

After both topics

Use it at the end of the Maya unit, once pupils have studied the Anglo-Saxons. Most of the sort depends on remembering both.

Tricky card debate

Put 'Skilled in metalwork' on the board and ask where it goes. The answer key note on jade and obsidian tools gives you the follow-up.
