Forces Vocabulary Word Search

Year 5 ScienceForces2 pages

About this worksheet

Twelve forces and mechanisms terms hide in an 11 by 12 letter grid on this Year 5 science word search. The list covers the forces in the unit (GRAVITY, FRICTION, DRAG, UPTHRUST, WEIGHT) and the simple machines (LEVER, PULLEY, GEAR). MASS, NEWTON, FORCE and SURFACE are in the list too. Words run across, down and diagonally, and GRAVITY, PULLEY and MASS read diagonally upwards, which makes them the hardest to spot. Page 2 is the answer key, with each word's start and end square and its direction. It supports the forces unit in the England National Curriculum for Year 5.

Curriculum objectives covered

Forces

โ€œExplain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling objectโ€

Vocabulary only. GRAVITY, WEIGHT, MASS and NEWTON are in the grid, but the sheet asks no questions about falling objects.

Forces

โ€œIdentify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfacesโ€

Vocabulary only. FRICTION, DRAG, UPTHRUST and SURFACE are in the grid.

Forces

โ€œRecognise that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effectโ€

Vocabulary only. LEVER, PULLEY and GEAR are three of the twelve words.

What's inside this worksheet

Forces and Mechanisms Vocabulary

Pupils find 12 words in an 11-row grid. Some run straight, such as NEWTON and SURFACE across and UPTHRUST down. FRICTION runs diagonally down to the right.

Answers

Row and column positions for each word, with its direction, for example GEAR from (7, 3) to (10, 3) down.

How teachers use it

Start of the unit

Give it out in the first forces lesson and ask pupils to star any word they cannot explain. Come back to the stars at the end of the unit.

Sort after finding

Once all 12 words are found, pupils sort them into forces, mechanisms and units. NEWTON is the only unit, which starts a good discussion.

Diagonal warning

If pupils get stuck, tell them that GRAVITY, PULLEY and MASS read upwards on a diagonal.
