Forces on a Falling Object Labelling

Year 5 ScienceForces2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page labelling diagram for Year 5 forces, with the answers on a second page. The diagram shows a skydiver under an open parachute, with six label lines from A to F. Pupils choose from a bank of six: Direction of movement, Air resistance, Falling skydiver, Gravity, Air particles and Parachute canopy. A thick arrow points up from the canopy and another points down below the skydiver. A thin arrow beside the skydiver shows the direction of movement, and small curved arrows under the canopy stand for air particles. It follows the England National Curriculum unit on forces.

Curriculum objectives covered

Forces

โ€œExplain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling objectโ€

Label F asks pupils to name gravity on the downward arrow below the skydiver.

Forces

โ€œIdentify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfacesโ€

Partly met. Labels A and C cover air resistance and the air particles behind it. Water resistance and friction are not on this sheet.

What's inside this worksheet

Word bank

Six labels: Direction of movement, Air resistance, Falling skydiver, Gravity, Air particles and Parachute canopy.

Parachute diagram

Pupils write a label on each line, A to F, from the upward arrow above the canopy to the downward arrow below the skydiver.

How teachers use it

Paper parachutes

Drop a paper parachute and a scrunched ball of paper side by side, then label the diagram.

Talk point

Ask pupils which arrow would grow if the canopy were bigger. It leads into why a parachute slows a fall.

Next-day starter

Read the six labels aloud the next day and have pupils point to the right letter on their sheet.
