Angles on a Straight Line

Year 5 MathsAngles3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 5 maths sheet on angles on a straight line, over three pages. A fact box shows 130° + 50° = 180° and a worked subtraction. Part 1 has eight diagrams with one angle given and one marked with a letter, such as 60°, 135° and 162°. Part 2 has two diagrams with three angles on one line and space for working out. Every diagram is marked not to scale. The key shows each subtraction. It follows the England National Curriculum Year 5 objective on angles on a straight line.

Curriculum objectives covered

Mathematics - Geometry: properties of shapes

“identify: angles at a point and one whole turn (total 360°); angles at a point on a straight line and ½ a turn (total 180°); other multiples of 90°”

All ten questions use the 180° total. Card 3 shows a right angle, so the missing angle is also 90°. Angles at a point (360°) are not covered here.

What's inside this worksheet

Maths Fact

A box with the rule that angles on a straight line add up to 180°, a diagram of 130° and 50°, and the example 180° − 130° = 50°.

Find the Missing Angle

Eight cards, a to h, each with one known angle: 60°, 135°, 90°, 25°, 110°, 47°, 162° and 88°. Pupils write the missing angle.

Three Angles on a Straight Line

Two diagrams: 50° and 70° with angle i, and 35° and 95° with angle j. Pupils add the two known angles, subtract from 180° and show their working on lines.

Answers

Each answer with its subtraction, from a = 120° to j = 50°.

How teachers use it

Draw it first

Pupils draw a straight line and two angles on a whiteboard before they read the fact box, so the rule makes sense.

Why not to scale

Point to the label on each card and ask why measuring would not help. Card 7 is a good one to talk through.

Extension

Pupils who finish Part 1 go straight to the two three-angle diagrams on page 2 and show every step.
