Angles Around a Point

Year 5 MathsAngles3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 5 maths sheet on angles around a point, over three pages. A fact box gives the rule that angles around a point add up to 360°. Six diagrams follow, marked not to scale, with two, three or four angles round the point. One has a missing reflex angle and one has a reflex angle given. Page 2 has two word problems, a pizza cut into 8 equal slices and a clock at 3 o'clock, each with a picture and a working box. The key shows every sum. It follows the England National Curriculum Year 5 objective on angles at a point.

Curriculum objectives covered

Mathematics - Geometry: properties of shapes

“identify: angles at a point and one whole turn (total 360°); angles at a point on a straight line and ½ a turn (total 180°); other multiples of 90°”

Diagrams a to f all use the 360° total, and the pizza and clock problems apply it with a division and a reflex angle.

Mathematics - Geometry: properties of shapes

“know angles are measured in degrees: estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles”

Diagram a asks for a reflex angle, diagram e gives one, and question 8 asks for the reflex angle at 3 o'clock.

What's inside this worksheet

Maths Fact

One rule in a box: angles around a point add up to 360°.

Missing Angles in Six Diagrams

Six numbered cards: 120° with a, three 90° angles with b, 100° and 150° with c, 45°, 135° and 90° with d, 200° with e, and three 75° angles with f.

Word Problems

Question 7 shows a pizza cut into 8 equal slices and asks for the angle of one slice. Question 8 shows a clock at 3 o'clock with a 90° angle and asks for the reflex angle on the other side. Each has a box for working.

Answers

All eight answers with the subtraction or division used, from a = 240° to the clock answer of 270°.

How teachers use it

Paper circles

Fold a paper circle into 8 before question 7 so pupils see that each slice is 45°.

Clock follow-up

After question 8, ask for the angle between the hands at 6 o'clock and at 9 o'clock.

Write your own

Pairs draw a diagram with three angles round a point, swap and solve each other's.
