Year 5 HistoryVikings and Anglo-Saxons3 pages

About this worksheet

From the first raid in Dorset to the Battle of Hastings, 16 events from Viking and Anglo-Saxon Britain sit in the word bank of this Year 5 history sheet. Pupils write each event into one of three periods: Early Raids (780 to 860 AD), Invasion and Settlement (861 to 954 AD), and Return of the Danes and 1066 (955 to 1066 AD). The sheet also asks them to order the events inside each box. Page 2 asks which event was hardest to place and asks for one fact of their own per period. The answer key gives a date for every card. It is written for KS2 history in the England National Curriculum.

What's inside this worksheet

Event Word Bank and Chronological Sorting Table

Pupils sort 16 events, including Alfred hides at Athelney, the St Brice's Day massacre and Sweyn Forkbeard invades, into three time-period columns.

Think Like a Historian

Pupils name the event they found hardest to place and say why. They then add one fact, person or event to each period.

Answers

Each column in date order, from 789 AD to October 1066. Notes cover three boundary cards such as Monks flee Lindisfarne (875 AD), and sample additions include Danegeld and Harald Hardrada.

How teachers use it

Washing line

Peg the 16 events on a line with 789 at one end and 1066 at the other. Pupils move cards until the class agrees, then copy them into the table.

Lindisfarne twice

Point out that Lindisfarne appears on two cards, for 793 and 875. Ask pupils what had changed for the monks between those dates.

Homework

Question 3 suits homework. Ask for a source with each new fact, so Offa of Mercia or Eric Bloodaxe comes back with a reference.
