Ancient Greek Legacy Matching

Year 5 HistoryAncient Greece4 pages

About this worksheet

Year 5 pupils match Ancient Greek achievements to what they mean today, across three tasks. First they join Parthenon, amphora, theatre and masks to four pictures. Next they write letters to match six legacies, from democracy and oligarchy to the Olympics and the marathon, to their definitions. A third set pairs Hippocrates, Archimedes, Pythagoras, Herodotus, the Greek alphabet and trial by jury with their impact on the modern world. Question 7 asks how one legacy still affects life in Britain. The sheet follows the England National Curriculum for KS2 history, and the answer page lists every letter.

What's inside this worksheet

The Legacy of Ancient Greece

Pupils join four words to four pictures. The images are shuffled, so the tragedy and comedy masks sit opposite the word Parthenon.

Greek legacies

Six words and six definitions, A to F, with democracy done as an example. Pupils match oligarchy, philosophy, mythology, Olympics and marathon.

Thinkers and impact

Six names or ideas to match to their impact, such as levers and pulleys for Archimedes and patient records for Hippocrates. Question 7 asks for a written link to Britain today.

Answers

The picture order, both letter sets and sample answers to question 7, such as voting for MPs and sitting on juries in Crown Courts.

How teachers use it

Two class votes

Before page 2, hold a class vote on a small decision, then repeat it with only three pupils deciding. Democracy and oligarchy are clear in five minutes.

Sports day link

Use the Olympics and marathon matches near sports day. Pupils compare the festival at Olympia in definition A with the modern games.

Extended writing

Question 7 works as a paragraph on its own. Ask pupils to choose from the page 3 set, so they write about Hippocrates or trial by jury and not the Olympics again.
