About this worksheet

Six events from Ancient Greece, from the first recorded Olympic Games in 776 BC to the Roman conquest in 146 BC, run through this Year 5 history sheet. Pupils sort fifteen museum clue cards, such as Pheidippides' long run and King of Macedon, into three eras. Then they write a new clue for each era. Page 3 has a timeline from 800 BC to 100 BC for events A to F, a box on why BC dates count down, and four years-between questions. The answers give the sort, the timeline order and each subtraction. It is written for the England National Curriculum Ancient Greece study.

What's inside this worksheet

Key Turning Points in Ancient Greece

A story about a museum curator's dropped tray, and fifteen cards that mix dates such as 490 BC with clues such as Sporting truce in Olympia.

Museum displays and Curator's Reflections

Pupils write each card under Early Traditions & Democracy, Persian Wars & Athens' Golden Age, or Macedonian Empire & Roman Rule, then name the trickiest card and add a clue of their own.

Ancient Greece Timeline

Pupils mark events A to F on a line from 800 BC to 100 BC, read why BC numbers get smaller, and find the years from 776 BC to 490 BC, 508 BC to 432 BC, 432 BC to 336 BC and 336 BC to 146 BC.

Answers

The completed sort, a note on why Pheidippides and 508 BC cause trouble, the timeline order and four subtractions.

How teachers use it

Pair the cards first

Cut the fifteen cards apart. Pairs match each date to its event before they sort the pairs into the three eras.

BC on a washing line

Read the BC box together, then peg 776 BC and 146 BC on a class washing line. Pupils see the numbers shrink as time moves to the right.

Questions 3 to 6 are plain subtractions with answers of 286, 76, 96 and 190 years. Use them as a starter in a maths lesson the same week.
