Greek Gods and Goddesses

Year 5 HistoryAncient Greece4 pages

About this worksheet

Eight gods of Mount Olympus for Year 5, over three pages and an answer page. Pupils match Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes and Hades to clues that give each one's role and symbol, from Hera's peacock to the three-headed dog Cerberus. A picture page follows, where six of the gods are joined to an owl, winged sandals, a trident, Cerberus, a lyre and a thunderbolt. The last page links temples, sacrifices, painted pottery, coins and the poems of Homer and Hesiod to what each shows about Greek beliefs. It fits the England National Curriculum study of Ancient Greece. The key gives every match and a model answer to the written question.

What's inside this worksheet

Beliefs and Symbols

Pupils write a letter from A to H next to each god. Zeus is done for them (D, the thunderbolt), so seven are left to match.

Picture match

Six names on the left and six pictures on the right. Pupils draw lines from Athena to the owl, Poseidon to the trident and so on.

Clues to Greek beliefs

Six clues, such as animal sacrifices at outside altars and coins stamped with an owl or trident, to match to what each one shows. Question 7 asks why temples mattered and how historians know what the Greeks believed.

Answers

All three sets of matches, then a model answer to question 7 that uses the Parthenon, painted pottery, coins and Homer as evidence.

How teachers use it

Start of the unit

Read the page 1 clues aloud and let pupils guess the god before they look at the names. Most already know Zeus and Poseidon from films and books.

Real evidence

Before page 3, show a museum photo of an Athenian coin with an owl on it. Pupils then see that clue 5 is a real object, not a made-up one.

Short write

Use question 7 as a ten-minute write. Ask pupils to name at least two kinds of evidence from page 3 in their answer.
