About this worksheet

A four-page fact file on Alexander the Great for Year 5. Page 1 is a short text with a map that marks Macedon, Pella, Alexandria, Babylon and India. It gives his birth in Pella in 356 BC, his tutor Aristotle, his crowning in 336 BC at the age of 20 and his death in Babylon in 323 BC. Pupils fill in seven boxes from the text, sketch a symbol of his empire, then write two or three sentences on whether he deserves the name 'the Great'. Model answers are on the last page. It follows the England National Curriculum study of Ancient Greece.

Seven boxes to fill in: year and place of birth, tutor, becoming king, conquests, the city he founded, year and place of death, and one surprising fact.

How teachers use it

Read the map first

Read page 1 aloud with the map on the board. Trace the route from Pella to India with your finger before pupils start the boxes.

For and against

Split the class into two sides before question 8. The text gives both: an empire that reached India, and the destruction his conquests caused.

Early finishers

Box 7 asks for one surprising fact. Pupils who finish early can look up a fact that is not on page 1 and share it at the end.
