This seven-page end-of-topic test gives Year 5 pupils 30 grammar and punctuation questions, with 30 to 45 minutes to finish. It covers modal verbs, adverbs of possibility, relative clauses, parenthesis, commas for clarity and verb prefixes. The questions follow the England National Curriculum vocabulary, grammar and punctuation objectives. An answer key is included, with a note on awarding the mark for remerge in question 21.

The questions use terms such as relative pronoun, adverb of possibility and verb prefix, so pupils need to know them.
Eight tick-box questions, such as the relative pronoun in 'The bicycle, _____ chain was broken' and the prefixes for behave and frost.
Pupils add commas to sentences like 'Inside the house was warmly lit', write five relative pronouns, add prefixes such as dis- and over-, and punctuate three parentheses.
Pupils join sentences with relative clauses, make 'I will win the spelling competition' less certain, add dashes to a sentence about a castle, and explain how a comma changes a sentence about painting children.
