Evaporation and Condensation at Home

Year 4 ScienceWater Cycle3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 4 science sheet that links evaporation and condensation to things pupils see at home, over three pages. Page 1 has eight photo cards to sort, four for each process. Page 2 asks why the outside of a cold can gets wet and where the water from a puddle goes, with five writing lines for each. The key gives a full explanation for both. It supports the England National Curriculum Year 4 objective on evaporation and condensation.

Curriculum objectives covered

Science - States of matter

โ€œidentify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of evaporation with temperatureโ€

All eight cards ask pupils to decide which process is at work, and questions 1 and 2 ask for a written explanation of one of each. The rate of evaporation is not covered.

What's inside this worksheet

Picture Sort

Eight photo cards: washing drying on a line, a steamy bathroom mirror, a puddle disappearing on a sunny day, drops on a cold can of drink, wet hair drying, breath on a cold window, a pan of water boiling dry and dew on the grass. Pupils write evaporation or condensation for each.

Explain What Happens

Two questions with a photo each. Pupils explain why a cold can gets wet and where the puddle water goes, using the words water vapour, heating and cooling.

Answers

The sort answers, then a model explanation for each question, one ending in condensation and one in evaporation.

How teachers use it

Photo vote

Show the eight photos on the board first and ask pupils to vote with a thumb before they write anything down.

Slow and fast

Cards 3 and 7 are both evaporation, one slow and one fast. Ask pupils what is different about them.

Home challenge

Send pupils off to find one more example of each process at home and add it to the back of the sheet.
