Conductors and Insulators Sort

Year 4 ScienceElectricity3 pages

About this worksheet

An electrician needs a mixed tray of materials sorted. This three-page Year 4 science sheet opens with a Key Fact box: conductors let current pass through easily, most good conductors are metals, and insulators do not let electricity through. Pupils then sort sixteen items into Electrical Conductors and Electrical Insulators. The items split eight and eight. Graphite pencil lead is the one non-metal conductor, and the answer key explains why it is tricky. In Think Like a Scientist, pupils name the hardest item and add a new conductor and insulator with their materials. It follows the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Electricity

โ€œRecognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors.โ€

All sixteen items are sorted as conductors or insulators, and seven of the eight conductors are metals. Graphite gives a useful exception to discuss.

What's inside this worksheet

Conductors and Insulators Sort

A short scenario about an electrician and a Key Fact box that links good conductors to metals.

Material Bank

Sixteen items, including a brass key, a silver coin, a wooden peg, a plastic bottle cap and a woollen sock.

Classification Table

Two columns, Electrical Conductors and Electrical Insulators.

Think Like a Scientist

Pupils explain the hardest item to place and name one new conductor and one new insulator, with the material each is made of.

How teachers use it

Circuit tester

Build a simple circuit with a gap and let groups test items they can find, such as foil, a paperclip and a ruler, to check their sort.

Graphite surprise

Leave the pencil lead until last and test it in front of the class. Most pupils expect it to be an insulator.

Safety link

Use the insulators column to talk about why plugs and cables are covered in plastic and rubber.
