About this worksheet

A Year 4 science cloze on the digestive system, for the England National Curriculum. Pupils fill twelve gaps in four paragraphs, using each word from the bank once. The text follows food in order from the mouth and teeth, through the oesophagus and stomach, to the small intestine, the large intestine and the rectum. It also covers saliva, stomach acid and nutrients passing into the blood. Two Think and Apply questions follow, and the answer key lists the words in order with sample answers.

How Your Digestive System Works

Four paragraphs with twelve gaps, one for each stage of the journey.

Think and Apply

Pupils explain why food must be chewed before it goes down the oesophagus, and what would happen if the small intestine could not absorb nutrients.

How teachers use it

After a model

Use it after a tights-and-bag digestion demo, so pupils have seen the journey before they read about it.
