Water Transport in Plants Cloze

Year 3 SciencePlants3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 3 science cloze on how water moves through a flowering plant. Ten words fill ten gaps, and each is used once. The passage follows water from the soil into the roots, up tiny tubes in the stem, into the leaves and petals, and out of pores under the leaves. A diagram with arrows shows the same path without labels. Think Like a Scientist asks pupils to predict what happens to celery in red water after 24 hours. The answer key gives the gaps in order and the celery answer. It follows two England National Curriculum objectives on plants.

What's inside this worksheet

The Journey of Water Through a Plant

A ten-word bank (absorb, evaporates, food, leaves, petals, roots, soil, stem, travel, tubes) and four paragraphs with ten gaps. The stem tubes are compared to drinking straws.

Think Like a Scientist

Pupils predict what happens to a celery stick in water with red food colouring and explain why.

How teachers use it

Run the celery test

Set up the celery in red water the day before. Pupils check their prediction for question 1 the next morning.

Trace the arrows

Pupils follow the arrows on the diagram with a finger as you read each paragraph.

White flowers

Put a white carnation in coloured water as well. The petals show the last part of the journey in the passage.
