Functions of Plant Parts Labelling

Year 3 SciencePlants2 pages

About this worksheet

A strawberry plant is the diagram on this one-page Year 3 science sheet, with six labels lettered A to F. Pupils use a word bank to name the flower, leaves, roots, fruit, stem and root hairs, and the bank gives each part's job alongside, such as 'anchor the plant and take in water'. A magnified view of one root shows the root hairs for label F. The sheet supports the Year 3 Plants unit of the England National Curriculum. A second page gives the answer for each letter with its function.

Curriculum objectives covered

Plants

โ€œIdentify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowersโ€

Labels A, B, C and E name the flower, leaves, roots and stem, and the word bank gives the job of each one.

Plants

โ€œInvestigate the way in which water is transported within plantsโ€

Partial. The word bank says the stem transports water and the root hairs take it in, but the sheet has no investigation. Pair it with a celery and food colouring practical.

What's inside this worksheet

Parts of a Flowering Plant and Their Jobs

Pupils write a plant part and its function on six lines pointing to a strawberry plant. The ripe strawberry is label D, and label F points into a magnified circle of root hairs.

Answers

Letters A to F with the part and its job, from 'Flower (attracts insects to make seeds)' to 'Root hairs (take in water and nutrients)'.

How teachers use it

Real plant

Bring in a potted strawberry or any flowering plant and ease it out of the pot. Pupils see the roots for themselves before they label C.

Hand lenses

Pass round hand lenses and a few cress or radish seedlings before label F. The fuzzy root hairs look much like the magnified view on the sheet.

Jobs from memory

Cover the bracketed jobs in the word bank with strips of paper before you copy the sheet. Pupils then write the job of each part from memory.
