Seed Dispersal Matching

Year 3 SciencePlants3 pages

About this worksheet

Titled How Seeds Travel, this Year 3 plants sheet starts with five dispersal methods to join to pictures: wind, animal fur, water, bursting and being eaten. The pictures show a dandelion clock, burdock burrs on a dog, a coconut floating on the sea, a pea pod splitting open and a bird eating a blackberry. Page 2 moves from pictures to seed features, such as stiff, wing-like blades and a twisting dry pod. A written question asks why seeds need to travel away from the parent plant. The answer key on page 3 covers every match. The sheet is matched to the England National Curriculum for Year 3 science.

What's inside this worksheet

How Seeds Travel

Pupils join five methods to five pictures. Water dispersal matches the coconut, which is the first picture in the column.

Seed features

Pupils write a letter from A to F beside six seed features. Fluffy parachute hairs and D is done for them. Others include tiny hooks and spines, and sweet, brightly coloured flesh.

Question 7

Pupils explain on four lines why seeds should land far from the parent plant and how that helps seedlings grow.

Answers

Picture matches, the letter matches 2-B, 3-A, 4-F, 5-E and 6-C, and a model answer about competing for sunlight, water and space.

How teachers use it

Real seeds

Bring in a sycamore key, a burr and a pea pod. Drop the sycamore from a chair so pupils see the helicopter spin from statement B.

Autumn walk

Collect seeds on the school grounds, then sort them under the five headings from page 1.

Writing check

Use question 7 as a short assessment. Look for the words sunlight, water and space, which the answer key expects.
