Magnetic or Not Sorting

Year 3 ScienceForces and Magnets3 pages

About this worksheet

A recycling workshop needs sixteen objects sorted. On this three-page Year 3 science sheet, pupils test or predict whether a magnet attracts each item, then write it under Magnetic or Non-Magnetic. Several items are metal but not magnetic, such as the brass key, the copper pipe, the gold ring and the aluminium foil. In Thinking Further, pupils name the hardest item and add one new item to each column. The answer key lists six magnetic items, all iron or steel, and explains why not all metals are magnetic. It follows the England National Curriculum.

Curriculum objectives covered

Forces and magnets

โ€œCompare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet, and identify some magnetic materialsโ€

The whole sort groups sixteen objects by whether a magnet attracts them, and the answer key names iron and steel as the magnetic metals.

Forces and magnets

โ€œObserve how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not othersโ€

Partly met. The sheet covers which materials a magnet attracts. It does not ask pupils to watch two magnets attract or repel each other.

What's inside this worksheet

Magnetic or Non-Magnetic: Material Sort

Sixteen objects, from a steel paperclip and an iron bolt to a woollen sock and a glass marble, with a two-column sorting table.

Thinking Further

Pupils explain which item was hardest to sort and add one magnetic and one non-magnetic item of their own.

How teachers use it

Predict, then test

Have pupils sort in pencil first, then test a real paperclip, foil and a key with a bar magnet and correct any wrong answers in pen.

Metal myth

Before the sort, ask whether all metals stick to magnets. The brass key, copper pipe and foil settle the question.

Classroom hunt

For question 2, send pairs round the classroom with a magnet to find a new object for each column.
