Attract or Repel Knowledge Check

Year 3 ScienceForces and Magnets4 pages

About this worksheet

Thirteen questions on magnets for Year 3, over four pages with the answer key on the last. Pupils name the two poles from a labelled bar magnet, then say what happens when like and opposite poles meet. A table of four pole pairs, such as North facing South, asks for attract or repel each time. Next pupils tick whether a magnet attracts a steel paperclip, a wooden pencil, an iron nail and a plastic building brick. Two longer questions close the sheet: Oliver's toy cars with South poles facing, and how Amira can find the real magnet. It follows the England National Curriculum unit on forces and magnets.

Curriculum objectives covered

Forces and magnets

โ€œObserve how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not othersโ€

Questions 8 to 11 cover which materials a magnet attracts. Pupils recall results here rather than observe them, so it suits the lesson after a practical.

Questions 4 to 7 and question 12 all ask for a prediction from the facing poles.
