Magnet Poles Labelling

Year 3 ScienceForces and Magnets2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page labelling diagram for Year 3 science, with a separate answer page. Pupils take six terms from a word bank and write them on lines A to F. A bar magnet drawn with dashed field lines carries four of the labels: north pole, south pole, bar magnet and magnetic field. Below it, two pairs of small magnets show a north pole facing a south pole and two south poles facing each other, for pupils to label attract and repel. The sheet is written for the Forces and magnets unit of the England National Curriculum.

What's inside this worksheet

Magnet Poles and Forces

Pupils copy words from the bank onto lines A to F. A and B point to the N and S ends, C to the magnet itself, D to a field line, and E and F to the two pairs of magnets.

Answers

One word for each letter, from A (north pole) to F (repel).

How teachers use it

Feel it first

Give each pair two bar magnets and let them feel the push and the pull before they label E and F.

Iron filings

Sprinkle iron filings on paper over a magnet. Pupils compare the pattern with the dashed lines that label D points to.

Later recall check

A few weeks on, fold the word bank out of sight and see who can still label all six lines.
