Perimeter Word Problems

Year 3 MathsPerimeter2 pages

About this worksheet

Six short perimeter problems for Year 3, with a box for a sketch under each. Pupils read about a garden 8 m by 5 m, a square card with 12 cm sides, a photo frame 15 cm by 10 cm, a flowerbed with sides of 3 m, 4 m and 5 m, a pitch 20 m by 10 m that Sam runs round twice, and a table 2 m by 1 m. Page 2 is the answer key, with a labelled picture and the sum for each. It follows England National Curriculum measurement for Year 3.

Curriculum objectives covered

Measurement

โ€œmeasure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapesโ€

Pupils meet a rectangle, a square and a triangle in a garden, a card, a frame, a flowerbed, a pitch and a table, and find the distance round each.

Measurement

โ€œmeasure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m/cm/mm)โ€

Problems 2 and 3 are in centimetres and the rest are in metres, so pupils keep the unit from the question. Problem 5 also needs the lap doubled.

What's inside this worksheet

Perimeter Word Problems

Six numbered problems in two columns, each with a sketch box. Problems 1, 3 and 6 give a rectangle, problem 2 a square and problem 4 a triangle. Problem 5 adds a second lap round the pitch.

Answers

A labelled picture and a worked sum for each problem, such as 20 m + 10 m + 20 m + 10 m = 60 m, then 60 m ร— 2 = 120 m for the two laps.

How teachers use it

Sketching first

Ask pupils to label the sides on their sketch before they add anything. In problem 2 the label has to go on all four sides of the square.

Paired talk

Pairs compare their sketches for problem 5 and explain why the answer is 120 m and not 60 m.

Practical link

Measure the classroom table or a book in centimetres, then let pupils write a seventh problem for a partner.
