Measure and Find the Perimeter

Year 3 MathsPerimeter3 pages

About this worksheet

Perimeter for Year 3, across three pages. Page 1 prints six shapes at real size, labelled A to F: three rectangles, a square, a right-angled triangle and a regular hexagon. Pupils measure each side in whole centimetres with a ruler and write the side lengths and the perimeter in a table. A printing note asks for 100% scale. Page 2 asks which two shapes had the shortest perimeter and for a 14 cm rectangle drawn with a ruler. The key lists every side, such as 7 cm, 2 cm, 7 cm and 2 cm for Shape D.

Curriculum objectives covered

Measurement

โ€œmeasure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapesโ€

Pupils measure and add the sides of six shapes in the table, then draw a rectangle with a given perimeter in question 2.

What's inside this worksheet

Shapes A to F

A note asks for printing at actual size. The six shapes run from a 4 cm square to a 7 cm by 2 cm rectangle, and a right angle is marked on the triangle.

Perimeter table

One row per shape, with a space for the side lengths and one for the total perimeter.

Perimeter Questions

Pupils name the two shapes with the shortest perimeter. Then they use a ruler to draw a rectangle with a perimeter of 14 cm in a box and label each side.

Answers

All side lengths and perimeters, then the shortest pair, Shapes C and F at 12 cm each. The key accepts 6 cm by 1 cm, 5 cm by 2 cm or 4 cm by 3 cm for the rectangle.

How teachers use it

Check the scale

Measure one shape with a ruler before you copy the class set, to be sure the printer did not shrink the page.

Same perimeter

Shapes C and F both measure 12 cm round, yet the hexagon looks much bigger. Ask pupils to explain why that can happen.

Rectangle challenge

Collect the rectangles from question 2 and see who found different pairs of sides. There are three whole-centimetre rectangles.
