Stone Age to Iron Age Timeline Sorting

About this worksheet

Fourteen events and artefacts from prehistoric Britain sit in the word bank on this Year 3 history sheet, and pupils sort them into Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age columns. Items include knapped flint hand axes, Skara Brae village, copper mining at Great Orme, round barrow burials, hillforts and rotary querns. Section 2 asks which item was hardest to place and why, then asks for one new item for each period. It is written for the KS2 history content of the England National Curriculum. The answer page adds a teacher note on Neolithic farming, Creswell Crags and why Great Orme was a copper mine and not a tin mine.

What's inside this worksheet

Section 1: Prehistoric Timeline Sort

Pupils sort 14 word-bank items into three columns. Smelting copper and tin goes under Bronze Age, while Celtic tribes and coins and forging iron swords belong to the Iron Age.

Section 2: Think Like a Historian

Pupils explain which item was hardest to place, with a hint about farming and bronze tools lasting across periods. They then add one item of their own to each age.

Answers

The sorted table (five Stone Age, four Bronze Age and five Iron Age items) and a note that accepts late Bronze Age hillforts if pupils give evidence. Sample additions include Doggerland, the Amesbury Archer and torcs.

How teachers use it

Card sort first

Print the 14 items as cards and let groups sort them on the table. Pupils move cards around more freely than they rub out answers.

Look for the material

Tell pupils to find the material in each item first. Flint, bronze and iron do most of the sorting, which leaves Skara Brae and the hillforts as the real thinking.

Class debate

Use Section 2 question 1 to debate First farmers in Britain. The answer note puts it in the Neolithic, yet farming carried on into the Iron Age.
