Year 3 EnglishSpelling3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 3 spelling sheet on words ending in -ture and -sure, the Years 3 and 4 pattern in English Appendix 1. On page 1, Leo and Maya find a map in their nan's attic and follow it to a walled garden. Pupils complete the story from a bank of twelve words, including creature, mixture, enclosure and measure, and use each word once. Page 2 asks for two sentences of their own, each pairing a -ture word with a -sure word. The last page lists the twelve gap words in order, with a model sentence for each challenge.

โ€œSpell words that are often misspelt (English Appendix 1)โ€

All twelve gap words use the -ture or -sure endings from the Years 3 and 4 list in Appendix 1.

What's inside this worksheet

Treasure hunt story

Pupils use twelve words, from adventure and furniture to capture and treasure, to fill the gaps in a four-paragraph story. Each word fits once.

Sentence Challenge

Two sentences to write. The second must use a different -ture word and a different -sure word from the first.

Answers

The gap words in story order, plus sample sentences such as It was a pleasure to paint a picture of the garden.

How teachers use it

Say it first

Read treasure and picture aloud before pupils start. The zh sound in treasure and the ch sound in picture are what tell the two endings apart.

Partner read

Pairs swap sheets and read the finished story aloud. A swapped word, such as a secret mixture at the edge of the trees, sounds wrong at once.

Next week's list

Use the twelve bank words as the class spelling list, and read out a few of the pupils' Sentence Challenge sentences as dictation.
