Prefixes sub-, inter-, super-, anti- and auto-

Year 3 EnglishSpelling4 pages

About this worksheet

Five Year 3 prefixes, sub-, inter-, super-, anti- and auto-, across three pages of matching. Pupils first join five words to pictures, such as anticlockwise to a clock with a backwards arrow. Next they write a letter to match each prefix, plus submerge and interact, to its meaning. The third page pairs six joined words, from subheading to autobiography, with clues like a fast train between two large towns. Pupils then use one joined word in a sentence and say how the prefix changes it. Answers for every set are on the final page.

Page 3 has pupils join sub, inter, anti and auto to root words such as heading, city and biography.

How teachers use it

Picture warm-up

Cover the words on page 1 and ask pupils to name each picture. Then reveal the words and look at how each one starts.

Prefix hunt

After page 2, give pupils two minutes to list other words that start with super- or anti-. Check each one against its meaning on the sheet.

Homework

Send page 3 home on its own. The clues explain each word, so pupils can match them without help, and the sentence task shows who understands the prefix.
