Dictated Spelling Test with Teacher Script

Year 3 EnglishSpelling6 pages

About this worksheet

A 20-word dictated spelling test for Year 3. Pupils write each word into a gap on a two-page answer sheet while the teacher reads from a script: the word, the full sentence, then the word again. The words cover prefixes such as disagree and supermarket, -ly and -ous words, -tion and -sion endings, and statutory list words like favourite and height. A marking grid splits each pupil's score by pattern, so a teacher can see which rule needs teaching again. An answer list with the rule for every word closes the test.

What's inside this worksheet

Teacher Dictation Script

Each item reads 'The word is ...', then the sentence, then the word again, with the spelling rule in brackets.

Answers

All 20 words with the rule each one tests.

How teachers use it

End-of-term check

Run it in one sitting of about 20 minutes. Read each sentence twice at a steady pace, without stressing the target sound.

Regroup by rule

Use the marking grid to pull together pupils who dropped marks on the same row, such as -sion, for a short reteach.

Retest later

Give the same 20 words in new sentences six weeks later and compare the two grids.
