Spelling Homework: ch in Chorus and Chef

Year 3 EnglishSpelling6 pages

About this worksheet

Twelve Year 3 spelling words with ch, split into two sounds: a k sound in Greek words like chorus, chemist and character, and a sh sound in French words like chef, machine and brochure. A note on page 1 explains the pattern to parents and carers. Four short tasks follow, one per day, from picture clues and a sort to three practice attempts, eight sentence gaps and two sentences of pupils' own. A Day 4 challenge adds the usual ch of cheese. Answers for every day are on page 6.

Note for parents and the word list

A short note on the k and sh sounds of ch, then the twelve words, scheme to brochure, to read aloud.

The picture words, the completed sort of eight k words and four sh words, all eight gap answers and two sample sentences.

How teachers use it

Monday handout

Read the twelve words aloud in class before the sheet goes home, so every pupil has heard the k and sh sounds once.

Friday test

Test the twelve words at the end of the week. The Day 3 sentences work well as the sentences you read aloud.

Parent help

The note on page 1 gives parents the rule in plain words, so they can help with the Day 1 sort without any teaching.
