Plant Growth Investigation Guided Notes

Year 2 SciencePlants3 pages

About this worksheet

Guided notes for a Year 2 plant growth investigation, following the plants unit of the England National Curriculum. Pupils fill 11 gaps from a word bank that includes germination, bulb, warmth and yellow. The notes run in four numbered parts, from starting as a seed or bulb to looking after plants in the school garden. Three write-on prompts tie the notes to a class experiment: a pot kept in a dark cupboard, a seed left on dry cotton wool, and two jobs a gardener must do. Page 3 gives every gap word and a model note for each prompt.

What's inside this worksheet

1. Starting from a Seed or a Bulb

Pupils fill four gaps about seeds, bulbs, germination and the root that holds the plant in place.

2. What Plants Need to Stay Healthy

Four more gaps cover water, sunlight, leaves and warmth. Pupils then explain in their own words why one class pot went into the dark cupboard.

3. Observing Our Plants Over Time

Pupils compare a plant grown in the light with one kept in the dark, filling in healthy, tall and yellow. They then describe what happened to the seed on dry cotton wool.

4. Looking After Plants in Our School Garden

Pupils write two things a gardener must do to help young seedlings grow into mature plants.

Answers

Gap words numbered 1 to 11 by section, with model notes for the cupboard pot, the dry seed and the gardener.

How teachers use it

Start the test early

The sheet assumes your class has a pot in a dark cupboard and a seed on dry cotton wool. Set both up a week or two before you hand it out.

Fill it as you go

Give out page 1 on planting day and page 2 once the dark pot has grown tall and yellow. Pupils then write from what they saw.

Hide the word bank

For a harder version, fold back the word bank. Pupils who can still supply germination and warmth have the vocabulary secure.
