Healthy Choices Sorting

Year 2 ScienceAnimals Including Humans4 pages

About this worksheet

Dr Clara's habit cards have got mixed up, and Year 2 pupils sort them out. This four-page sheet lists fifteen items, such as brushing teeth, skipping rope, steamed broccoli and sneezing into a tissue. Pupils write each one in a table under Healthy Eating, Exercise & Rest or Keeping Clean, five in each. Two questions follow: which item was hardest to sort, and one new habit for each column. The answer key gives the sort and sample new habits, such as dancing and wearing clean socks. It follows the England National Curriculum for animals, including humans.

Curriculum objectives covered

Animals, including humans

โ€œDescribe the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene.โ€

The three columns are food, exercise and hygiene. Pupils sort into them, but the sheet does not ask them to describe why each matters or to think about amounts of food.

Animals, including humans

โ€œFind out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival (water, food and air)โ€

Partly met. Drinking fresh water and the food items touch on two basic needs, and the key names water as a survival need. Air is not covered.

What's inside this worksheet

Healthy Choices: Daily Habits Sort

A short story about Dr Clara's mixed-up toolkit sets the task.

Habit Bank

Fifteen items, including washing hands, riding a bicycle, drinking fresh water and sleeping at night. Some, such as crunchy carrots, are foods rather than habits.

Habit Sorting Table

Three columns: Healthy Eating, Exercise & Rest and Keeping Clean. The headings are on page 1 and the writing rows on page 2.

Think and Explain

Pupils say which item was hardest to sort and why, then add one new idea for each column.

How teachers use it

Circle time

Read out sleeping at night and ask where it goes. It leads into a talk on why the body needs rest after exercise.

Copy the headings

Ask pupils to write the three headings at the top of page 2 first, because the writing rows print without them.

After PE

Straight after a PE lesson, ask pupils which Exercise & Rest item they just did, then add one more of their own.
