Year 2 ScienceAnimals Including Humans3 pages

About this worksheet

Pupils match young animals to their names and then to how they grow on this three-page Year 2 science sheet. Page 1 has five pictures to join to Tadpole, Caterpillar, Lamb, Foal and Duckling. On page 2, six adults (sheep, frog, butterfly, chicken, human and bear) are matched to lettered descriptions of how each young animal grows. Sheep and C is done as an example. A final question asks pupils to explain one pair in their own words. Page 3 gives all the answers and two model responses. The sheet covers the animals, including humans unit in the England National Curriculum for Year 2.

What's inside this worksheet

Picture matching

Pupils join five words to five pictures. The tadpole is the third picture and the duckling the first, so no line goes straight across.

Adults and how their young grow

Pupils write a letter from A to F beside each adult. Descriptions include hatching from frogspawn and losing a tail, and a cub born in a den.

Question 7

Pupils choose one pair and write three lines on how the young animal changes as it grows into an adult.

Answers

The picture matches, the letter matches 1-C, 2-A, 3-D, 4-E, 5-B and 6-F, and two sample answers for question 7 about a frog and a sheep.

How teachers use it

Talk first

Show the five pictures on the board and ask what each baby will grow into before anyone draws a line.

Spot the odd ones

Ask which two animals in the page 2 table change shape completely as they grow. Pupils should pick the frog and the butterfly.

Human link

Use row 5 (human) to start a timeline of the class from baby to child, with photos if families send them in.
