Exercise, Food and Hygiene Knowledge Check

Year 2 ScienceAnimals Including Humans5 pages

About this worksheet

Twelve questions for Year 2 science, set over five pages with a full answer key. The check opens with the three basic needs for survival: water, fresh air and food. It then moves through exercise and the heart, three food groups and the five-a-day target. It ends with hygiene: scrubbing hands for 20 seconds, brushing teeth, and what Sam should do after he sneezes into his hands. Questions mix tick boxes, a matching table and short written answers. It matches two Year 2 objectives from the England National Curriculum.

What's inside this worksheet

Section 1: Basic Needs for Survival

Pupils tick water, fresh air and food from a list that also has toys, sweets and television, then say what happens to a person with no water for several days.

Section 2: Exercise and Our Bodies

Questions on the heart and breathing during a fast run, two ways exercise helps the body, and which of three activities gives the best workout.

Section 3: Healthy Eating

Pupils match fruit and vegetables, bread, rice and pasta, and meat, fish, eggs and beans to what each does. They explain why crisps or cake alone is unhealthy and pick how many portions of fruit and vegetables to eat a day.

Section 4: Good Hygiene

Two times to wash hands, how long to scrub (2 seconds, 20 seconds or 10 minutes), why we brush teeth twice a day, and advice for Sam after he sneezes during a board game.

How teachers use it

Pulse check

Before question 3, have pupils run on the spot for a minute and put a hand on their chest.

Glitter germs

Teach Section 4 with glitter on one pupil's hands, then talk about Sam and the board game in question 12.

End of the unit

Set the check as the last lesson of the topic. Questions 7 and 12 show which pupils can explain an idea as well as recall it.
