Year 1 HistoryToys Past and Present3 pages

About this worksheet

A sorting activity for Year 1 history, set in a Toy Museum where the curator has dropped a display box. Pupils read the twelve toys in the Toy Bank and write each one in a three-column table headed Past, Both and Present. A picture of a wooden rocking horse beside a toy robot sets the scene. Two Museum Detective Questions follow. They ask for the hardest toy to place and a new toy for each column. The answer key puts four toys in each column and suggests extras such as a peg doll and a drone. It links to the England National Curriculum study of changes within living memory.

Curriculum objectives covered

Changes within living memory

โ€œChanges within living memory. Where appropriate, these should be used to reveal aspects of change in national lifeโ€

The Both column shows the change. Pupils see that a teddy bear and a jigsaw puzzle lasted, while a tablet computer is new.

What's inside this worksheet

Toy Museum: Past and Present

The curator's mixed-up labels set the task, with a picture of a wooden rocking horse next to a toy robot.

Toy Bank

Twelve toys to sort, including a china doll, a cup and ball, a yo-yo, a remote control car and an electric scooter.

Museum Sorting Table

Three columns headed Past (Old Toys), Both (Then and Now) and Present (Modern Toys) for pupils to write in.

Museum Detective Questions

Pupils name the toy that was hardest to place and say why, then add one new toy to each column.

How teachers use it

Ask a grandparent

Send question 2 home so pupils ask an older relative which toys they had. Add the answers to the Past column in class.

Real objects

Bring in a yo-yo and a bouncing ball. Ask pupils why these two belong in the Both column.

Class vote

The key names the teddy bear and the yo-yo as the tricky ones. Take a vote on each before you show the answer.
