Toys from the Past Matching Activity

Year 1 HistoryToys Past and Present3 pages

About this worksheet

This Year 1 history worksheet puts toys from the past beside toys children use now. Page 1 lists five old toys, from a rocking horse to wooden skittles, for pupils to join to their pictures. Page 2 is a step up. Six toys, including a clockwork tin train, a Victorian china doll and an electronic tablet game, are matched by letter to how they work or what they are made from, with 1-C done as an example. The sheet follows the England National Curriculum for KS1 history, and page 3 gives every answer.

What's inside this worksheet

Toys from the Past and Present

Pupils draw lines to join five toy names (rocking horse, spinning top, cup and ball, rag doll and wooden skittles) to pictures set out in a different order.

How it works or what it is made from

Pupils write a letter beside six toys. The Victorian china doll pairs with hard, shiny clay that cracks if dropped, and the modern plastic doll with bendy material that will not smash.

Answers

The picture number for each toy on page 1, then the letters 1-C to 6-B for page 2, each with its description repeated.

How teachers use it

Handling session

If you can borrow a wooden spinning top or a cup and ball, let pupils try it before they meet the picture on page 1.

Old or new

After page 2, ask pupils to sort the six toys into two piles, old and new. The two dolls give the best argument about what changed.

Ask at home

Send pupils home to ask a grandparent which of the page 1 toys they played with, and share the answers the next morning.
