Astronaut and Rocket Labelling

Year 1 HistoryThe Moon Landing2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page labelling sheet for Year 1 history on the Apollo 11 Moon landing, with the answers on a second page. The picture shows an astronaut in a white spacesuit on the grey, cratered surface of the Moon, with a rocket standing beside him. Pupils copy six words from the word bank onto lines A to F: helmet, visor, spacesuit, gloves, boots and rocket. It fits England National Curriculum work on events beyond living memory, and the key gives the word for each letter.

Curriculum objectives covered

Events beyond living memory

โ€œEvents beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally [for example, the Great Fire of London, the first aeroplane flight or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries]โ€

The sheet is set on the Moon during Apollo 11, but pupils only label equipment. The date and the story of the landing need to come from your teaching.

Lives of significant individuals

โ€œThe lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods [for example, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, William Caxton and Tim Berners-Lee, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and LS Lowry, Rosa Parks and Emily Davison, Mary Seacole and/or Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell]โ€

Partial. Neil Armstrong is named in this statement, but the sheet does not name the astronaut, so tell pupils who he is.

How teachers use it

Before the video

Give out the sheet before you watch the landing footage, then ask pupils to spot the visor and gloves on screen.

Dressing-up box

Hold up a cycle helmet, winter gloves and wellies, and ask which label on the sheet each one matches.

Later in the week

Fold the word bank under and see who can still write visor and spacesuit without it.
