Apollo 11 Journey Storyboard

Year 1 HistoryThe Moon Landing3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page storyboard for Year 1 history about the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Pupils play a film director planning a television documentary. They start with three questions on the commander, the rocket and where the capsule landed. A word bank helps, with terms such as Saturn V rocket, Eagle lander and splashdown. Then they draw six panels in order, from the launch to Safe Return Home, with a caption under each. There is no answer key, so the teacher checks the facts. It links to the England National Curriculum for history.

Curriculum objectives covered

Events beyond living memory

โ€œEvents beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally [for example, the Great Fire of London, the first aeroplane flight or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries]โ€

The six panels put the 1969 Moon landing in order, from launch to splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

Significant individuals

โ€œThe lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods [for example, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, William Caxton and Tim Berners-Lee, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and LS Lowry, Rosa Parks and Emily Davison, Mary Seacole and/or Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell]โ€

Question 1 names Neil Armstrong as commander. The sheet does not compare him with anyone from another period, so that part is left for another lesson.

How teachers use it

After the story

Retell the Apollo 11 story with the class first. Then pupils use the word bank to answer the three Step 1 questions before they draw.

Talk partners

Before drawing, pairs say aloud what happens in each panel. Check they put The Eagle Lands before Walking on the Moon.

Washing line display

Cut the six panels apart and peg them on a line in order. Pupils read their captions out as a class retelling.
