About this worksheet

This 3-page 5th grade photosynthesis sheet starts with a plant diagram. Five numbered arrows show sunlight, water, carbon dioxide, oxygen and sugar, and students write the matching word from a five-word bank next to each number. Page 2 gives the word equation with four blanks and the words light energy already printed, followed by three short written questions about where the water and carbon dioxide come from and what the plant does with the sugar. It fits NGSS 5-LS1-1, and page 3 is the answer key.

Curriculum objectives covered

5-LS1-1

โ€œSupport an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.โ€

The diagram has students label carbon dioxide entering the leaf and water rising from the roots, and questions 7 and 8 ask where each one comes from.

What's inside this worksheet

Part 1 Label the Diagram

A plant with a sun in the corner and five colored arrows, each with a number. Students pick sunlight, water, carbon dioxide, oxygen or sugar from the word bank and write it on the matching numbered line.

Part 2 Word Equation

A boxed equation with a blank, a blank, then the printed words light energy, an arrow and two more blanks. Students fill in the two inputs and the two outputs.

Questions 7 to 9

Three short written answers: where the water comes from, where the carbon dioxide comes from, and what the plant uses the sugar for. Each has three lines.

Answer key

Answers for all nine items. The equation accepts the two inputs in either order and the two outputs in either order.

How teachers use it

After the first reading

Hand it out once students have met the word photosynthesis. Page 1 shows quickly who can tell an input from an output before anyone tries the equation.

Follow the arrows

Ask students to trace each arrow with a finger before they write. Arrows 3 and 4 share a color, so the direction into or out of the leaf is the only clue.

Exit ticket

Use page 2 on its own at the end of a lesson. Question 9 shows whether students know the sugar is the plant's food and not only something it makes.
