Your Weight on Other Worlds

5th Grade ScienceGravity3 pages

About this worksheet

A four-row table drives this 3-page 5th grade science sheet. It compares gravity on Earth, the Moon, Mars and Jupiter and gives the weight of a 100-pound object on each: 100, 17, 38 and 253 pounds. Part 1 asks where the object weighs least and most and how much less it weighs on Mars than on Earth. Part 2 has three written questions on whether mass changes, why Jupiter's pull is stronger and why an astronaut jumps higher on the Moon. Page 3 is the answer key.

Curriculum objectives covered

โ€œCompare the weight of the same object on different worlds using a table.โ€

Part 1 asks where a 100 lb object weighs least and most, and how much less it weighs on Mars.

โ€œExplain that mass stays the same while weight changes with the strength of gravity.โ€

Part 2, question 4 asks whether mass changes, and question 6 links weaker gravity on the Moon to higher jumps.

What's inside this worksheet

Comparing Gravity and Weight

A table with the world, its gravity compared with Earth and the weight of a 100 lb object, and three questions with answer boxes. Students pick the least and most, then subtract 38 from 100.

Gravity and Mass Questions

Three written questions, with a photo of an astronaut jumping on the Moon beside the last one.

Answers

The Moon (17 lb), Jupiter (253 lb), 62 lb less, and short model answers for the three written questions.

How teachers use it

Use the fraction column

Ask students to estimate a 60 pound backpack on the Moon with the one-sixth column before looking at the weights.

Why 40 and 38

The Mars row says about four tenths and gives 38 lb. Ask students why 40 and 38 differ. Both are rounded figures, which is a good moment to talk about about.

Jump question

Show the photo on page 2, then have students finish the sentence The Moon pulls less, so before they write in full.
