Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.

The sort table enacts inheritance: each checkmark in a subcategory column drags along every column to its left, and question 4 makes students say so for the square.

Part 1: Shape Bank

Labeled figures show their evidence in tick marks and angle squares: Figure A carries 4 equal sides and 4 right angles, Figure B has 2 pairs of parallel sides with 4 right angles, and a rhombus follows without the right angles.

Part 2: Category Sort

Students place checkmarks in every applicable column from Polygon through Square for each figure. The square's row fills all six columns; the rectangle's row stops before Rhombus.

Part 3: Hierarchy Reasoning

Three statements get Always, Sometimes or Never with written reasoning: a rectangle is a parallelogram, a parallelogram is a square, and a trapezoid is a rhombus. Question 4 then asks students to argue from properties that a square is both a rectangle and a rhombus.

Answer key

A completed sort table shows every checkmark, and the reasoning answers spell out why the trapezoid's single pair of parallel sides locks it out of the rhombus category.

How teachers use it

Table-first teaching

Complete Figure A's row as a class and count its checkmarks aloud. Once students see six checks for the square, the rest of the table becomes a game of how-far-left-does-it-reach.

Reasoning quality check

Accept no answer in Part 3 without a property named. Sometimes because it depends is the response to reject; the key's model answers name parallel pairs and side lengths every time.
