What's inside this worksheet

Features of a State Map

A six-word bank sits above a large map of a made-up state. A red star marks the capital, a dashed line traces the border, and a small key shows mountain, forest, and river symbols. Students write one feature name on each blank line, and every word is used once.

Answer Key

A is the Capital City, B the Compass Rose, C the Map Key, D a Geographic Region, E the Border, and F the River.

How teachers use it

Mini-lesson starter

Border and Geographic Region are the pair students confuse. Trace a border on a real state map with your finger, then shade one region, before you hand this out.

Pair with a road map

Once the six labels are done, give pairs a highway map of your state and have them find the capital, compass rose, key, border, and a river. Regions will not be marked, which sets up your next lesson.

Substitute day

Ten minutes covers it, and it needs no reading beyond the directions, so it suits a sub plan at the start of a geography unit.
