Whole Numbers as Fractions

3rd Grade MathFractions2 pages

About this worksheet

This 3rd grade sheet fits 44 items on whole numbers written as fractions onto one page. The Warm Up turns fractions such as 8/8, 5/1 and 9/3 into whole numbers. Level Up gives the denominator and the whole number and asks for the numerator, as in ?/4 = 3. The Mixed Challenge finds missing denominators, matches 3/1 to ?/2, and asks how many fourths equal 2. Denominators stay at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8. It covers Common Core 3.NF.3c and 3.NF.3b, and a second page lists every answer.

Curriculum objectives covered

3.NF.3c

โ€œExpress whole numbers as fractions, and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers. Examples: Express 3 in the form 3 = 3/1; recognize that 6/1 = 6; locate 4/4 and 1 at the same point of a number line diagram.โ€

Items 6 to 10 and 44 put whole numbers over 1, and items 1 to 5 and 21 to 24 show fractions equal to 1.

3.NF.3b

โ€œRecognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.โ€

Items 39 to 41 ask for the missing number in equal pairs such as 4/2 = ?/3.

Find the Missing Number

Sixteen fractions with the numerator missing, such as ?/1 = 7, ?/8 = 1 and ?/6 = 2.

Mixed Challenge

Missing denominators like 12/? = 3, equal pairs like 3/3 = ?/4, and three word items, ending with writing 5 with a denominator of 1.

Answers

All 44 answers in three groups, with 5/1 written out for the last item.

How teachers use it

Start with 1

Do items 1 to 5 together and ask what all five have in common. Students who see that the top and bottom match find items 21 to 24 easy.

Count in halves

Draw a line from 0 to 3 in halves on the board before Level Up. Students count the halves to check that 6/2 lands on 3.

Homework page

All the questions fit on one page, so it works as homework. Go over items 42 and 43 the next day, since they need counting in halves and fourths.
