Unit Fractions

3rd Grade MathFractions3 pages

About this worksheet

Unit fractions are the building blocks on this two-page 3rd grade sheet. The Warm Up has 12 sums of unit fractions, from 1/2 + 1/2 up to seven eighths added one at a time. Level Up hides one unit fraction in sums like 3/6 = 1/6 + ? + 1/6, then gives six pairs such as 1/8 and 1/6 to compare. The Fraction Sprint names unit fractions of 2 to 8 equal parts, picks the smallest and largest of three, and asks how many 1/8s make 1 whole. It ties to Common Core 3.NF.1 and 3.NF.3d, and a third page gives all 36 answers.

Curriculum objectives covered

3.NF.1

โ€œUnderstand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.โ€

The Warm Up and sprint items 6 to 8 build fractions like 5/6 and 3/8 from parts of size 1/6 and 1/8.

3.NF.3d

โ€œCompare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.โ€

Level Up items 7 to 12 and sprint items 9 and 10 compare unit fractions, which all have a numerator of 1.

What's inside this worksheet

Sums of Unit Fractions

Twelve sums with one denominator each, such as 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 and 1/8 added five times.

Missing Unit Fractions and Comparisons

Six sums with one unit fraction missing, then six pairs like 1/3 and 1/2 to compare with <, > or =.

Fraction Sprint

Twelve quick items, among them 1 of 6 equal parts, five 1/6 parts, the smallest of 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8, and how many 1/4s make 3/4.

Answers

All answers by section, with 2/2, 3/3 and 4/4 also given as 1.

How teachers use it

Strips on the desk

Give out paper fraction strips before Level Up. Students lay 1/8 next to 1/6 and see the answer to item 12 before they write the symbol.

Bigger number, smaller piece

Stop after item 7 and ask why 1/4 is less than 1/2 when 4 is more than 2. Most wrong answers on items 8 to 12 come from this idea.

Next-day starter

Use the 12 sprint items the next morning as a timed starter, then go over items 11 and 12 together.
