Naming Fractions: Numerator and Denominator

3rd Grade MathFractions3 pages

About this worksheet

Forty-five short items on two pages give 3rd grade students practice with fraction names. The Warm Up asks for the numerator of 7/8 or the denominator of 4/4. Level Up turns phrases like 5 of 6 equal parts into a fraction, then works backwards from fractions such as 2/2 and 3/6. The last set changes words like three eighths into numbers and builds fractions from parts of size 1/4, 1/6 and 1/8. Only halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths appear. The sheet matches Common Core 3.NF.1, and the answers are on a third page.

How teachers use it

Name the parts

Before the Warm Up, write 3/4 on the board and ask which number tells how many equal parts make the whole. The first 15 items then go quickly.

Sketch a bar

Ask students to draw a quick bar for three Level Up items, such as 5 of 8 equal parts. The sheet is all symbols, so this adds the picture.

Fraction dictation

Read items 31 to 40 aloud as a dictation. Students write each fraction as a number without looking at the page.
