Fractions Support Sheet: Halves, Thirds, and Fourths

3rd Grade MathFractions4 pages

About this worksheet

A large-print support sheet on halves, thirds and fourths for 3rd grade, over 4 pages. Two worked examples show one shaded half and one shaded third with the fraction written underneath. Students then name the shaded part of six rectangles and shade one part of six more. Three food stories finish the sheet: half a pizza, a third of a sandwich and a fourth of a pie. It covers Common Core 3.NF.1 with unit fractions only, and the key accepts any one equal part shaded.

3.NF.1

โ€œUnderstand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.โ€

What's inside this worksheet

Name the Shaded Part

Two worked examples, then six rectangles split into 2, 3 or 4 equal parts with one part shaded. Students write the fraction for each.

Shade Equal Parts

Six rectangles already divided into columns or rows. Students shade one half, one third or one fourth.

Fraction Stories

Mia's pizza in 2 pieces, Ben's sandwich in 3 and Ava's pie in 4. Students shade the piece eaten and write the fraction.

Answers

Three short tables: the fraction for items 1 to 6, the part to shade for items 7 to 12, and the stories.

How teachers use it

Before sixths and eighths

Use it with students who are not ready for the main fractions sheet. Once they get all 15 items right, move them on to sixths and eighths.

Fold paper first

Fold a paper strip into thirds with the group before page 2. Students who have tried to fold equal thirds understand why the parts must match.

Say it, then write it

Ask students to say one third out loud as they write 1/3. The word bank at the top links the word to the number.
