Students pick the pet they think is best and build an opinion paragraph one part at a time on this 3-page 3rd grade writing sheet. They write an opinion sentence, give two reasons joined with linking words such as because, since, and for example, and add a concluding sentence. Then they copy it all into a final draft. It follows W.3.1.a to W.3.1.d. The third page is a model answer about a quiet, easy-care turtle.

Students write one concluding sentence that wraps up the ideas and reminds the reader of the opinion.
Students combine the introduction, both reasons, and the conclusion into one paragraph on the lines provided.
Shared writing
Write the dog example together on the board, then change the pet and the reason as a class. Students see that the opinion sentence keeps its shape whatever animal they choose.
Revision check
In the Final Draft, many students drop the linking words they used in their reasons. Have them circle each linking word before they hand it in.
Opinion unit launch
The pet topic needs no research, so it suits the first week of opinion writing. Plan two short sessions, one for the parts and one for the final draft.
