Goods, Services, Producers, and Consumers

2nd Grade Social StudiesEconomics and Trade3 pages

About this worksheet

Goods and services come first on this three-page 2nd grade economics sheet. Students look at six pictures, including a loaf of bread, a haircut, a toy car, and a school bus driver, and write good or service under each. The second part defines producers and consumers, then gives two short stories: Farmer Dan grows pumpkins that Sarah buys, and Leo spends allowance money on a puzzle. Students name the producer or consumer in each. The page links to C3 Framework indicator D2.Eco.4.K-2, and an answers page gives the two story answers only.

D2.Eco.4.K-2

โ€œDescribe the goods and services that people in the local community produce and those that are produced in other communities.โ€

Sort It Out, where students name bread, a toy car, and an apple as goods and a haircut, a doctor, and a bus driver as services, and the Farmer Dan story about who grows and who buys. The sheet does not compare local goods with those from other communities.

What's inside this worksheet

Sort It Out

After a two-line definition of a good and a service, students label six cartoon pictures: bread, scissors cutting hair, a red toy car, a doctor with a stethoscope, an apple, and a bus driver.

Producers and Consumers

Story 1 asks who the producer is when Sarah buys a pumpkin from Farmer Dan. Story 2 asks who the consumer is when Leo buys a puzzle that a toy company made.

How teachers use it

Mini lesson

Hold up a pencil, then pretend to sharpen a student's pencil for them. That thirty-second demo makes the two definitions stick before students start the six pictures.

Tricky picture

Watch the doctor picture. Some students write good because a stethoscope is something you can touch, so talk through who is doing a job for whom.

Story extension

After the two stories, have students write a third about a family business they know. Swap papers so a partner names the producer and the consumer.
