Properties of Solids, Liquids and Gases

2nd Grade ScienceStates of Matter3 pages

About this worksheet

A table and a drawing task compare solids, liquids and gases on this 2nd grade sheet. Page 1 asks three yes or no questions for each state: does it keep its own shape, can it flow or pour, and does it spread out to fill the whole container. On page 2 students draw a block, water and dots in three empty jars. It fits NGSS 2-PS1-1, and page 3 shows the filled table and describes each drawing.

Curriculum objectives covered

2-PS1-1

โ€œPlan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.โ€

The table has students describe solids, liquids and gases by three observable properties, and the jars turn those properties into pictures.

What's inside this worksheet

Properties of Matter Table

A grid with Solid, Liquid and Gas down the side and three questions across the top. Students write yes or no in nine boxes.

Draw the Matter in the Jars

Three jars labeled Solid, Liquid and Gas. Students draw a block on the bottom of the first, water partly filling the second and dots spread through the whole third.

Answers

The completed table, plus a description of what each jar drawing should show, such as a flat top surface on the water.

How teachers use it

Fill the table together

Hold up a block and pour water into a cup while students fill in the first two rows. Let them do the gas row on their own.

Jar drawings as a check

Walk round during page 2. A gas drawn only at the bottom of the jar shows who still thinks it sinks like a liquid.

Pair with a balloon

Blow up a balloon after page 2 and ask which jar it matches. It links the dots in the gas jar to the air students can feel.
