About this worksheet

Heat and cooling are the focus of this 4-page 2nd grade sheet on melting and freezing. Students number three ice pop pictures from frozen to melted and name what made the pop change. Next they label four changes as melting or freezing, from ice to water to butter in a hot pan. Last, a check mark chart sorts frozen juice, a melted crayon, an egg and paper by whether they can change back. It fits NGSS 2-PS1-4, with the answer key on page 4.

What's inside this worksheet

Put the Ice Pop in Order

Three pictures, a drooping pop, a puddle on a plate and a whole pop on a stick, each with a box for 1, 2 or 3. One line asks what made the ice pop change.

Melting or Freezing

Four arrow pictures numbered 3 to 6: ice to water, water to ice, butter in a hot pan and juice in a freezer. Students write melting or freezing under each, using a two-word bank.

Can It Change Back

A chart with two check columns for frozen juice melting, a melted crayon cooling, an egg being cooked and paper being burned.

Answers

The picture order (2, 3, 1 from left to right), the cause (heat), melting or freezing for items 3 to 6, and the completed check chart.

How teachers use it

Real ice pops

Leave a frozen pop on a plate while students work on page 1. By the time they finish, the first picture is no longer a guess.

Crayon and egg

Ask students to say aloud why the crayon goes back to a solid but the egg does not. Most answer that the egg was cooked, which opens a talk about heat that changes a material for good.

Kitchen homework

Send page 2 home with a prompt to find one melting and one freezing in the kitchen. Butter and ice cube trays are easy finds.
