Inherited and Non-Inherited Characteristics Sort

Year 6 ScienceEvolution and Inheritance3 pages

About this worksheet

This Year 6 evolution and inheritance sheet asks pupils to sort twelve human traits over three pages. Two columns are given: Inherited Characteristics and Environmental (Acquired) Characteristics. The traits range from natural eye colour and blood group O to pierced ears, playing the violin and a suntan from the beach. Six go in each column. Two questions follow, one on the trait that was hardest to place and one asking for a new trait of each kind. The answer key gives the sort and explains why the suntan sits on the border. It follows the England National Curriculum for evolution and inheritance.

Curriculum objectives covered

Evolution and inheritance

โ€œRecognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parentsโ€

The inherited column and the mother and daughter picture show features passed from parent to child. The sheet does not ask pupils how offspring differ from their parents, so that half needs a follow-up.

What's inside this worksheet

Inherited and Acquired Characteristics

A short explanation of the two kinds of trait, and a picture of a mother and daughter with the same wavy hair and dimples.

Word Bank

Twelve traits, including attached earlobes, ability to roll tongue, a scar on the knee and speaking fluent English.

Classification Table

Two columns, one for inherited traits and one for environmental traits.

Think Like a Scientist

A Tricky Boundary question and an Add Your Own question for one new trait of each kind.

How teachers use it

Family survey

Ask pupils to check eye colour and earlobes at home before the lesson. Keep it optional, as some pupils do not live with birth parents.

Tongue rolling

The sheet treats tongue rolling and earlobes as simple inherited traits. Scientists now think they are less clear cut, which suits question 1 with Year 6.

Puppy photos

After the sort, show a photo of a litter of puppies and ask how each one differs from its parents and its brothers and sisters.
