Circuit Diagram with Symbols Labelling

Year 6 ScienceElectricity2 pages

About this worksheet

Circuit symbols for Year 6 science, on one labelling page. A single circuit diagram drawn in black lines holds six components, with label lines A to F pointing to each symbol. Pupils copy the names from a word bank: buzzer, cell, motor, switch (open), battery and lamp. The diagram puts a single cell and a two-cell battery in the same circuit, so pupils must tell them apart. The answer key on page 2 gives each label. It follows the England National Curriculum electricity objective on recognised symbols.

Curriculum objectives covered

Electricity

โ€œUse recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram.โ€

Partly met. Pupils read all six symbols, but they do not draw a circuit of their own.

What's inside this worksheet

Electrical Circuit Symbols

A six-word word bank and a circuit with A at the cell, B at the open switch and the other four symbols round the loop.

Answer key

The six component names for A to F.

How teachers use it

Cell or battery

Spend a minute on A and F before pupils start. The only difference is one cell or two.

Build it

Give groups the real components and ask them to build the circuit from the diagram. With the switch open, nothing works.

Draw your own

Follow up by asking pupils to draw a circuit with a cell, a closed switch and two lamps, using the same symbols.
